Managing Social Media: Curating a Kinder Feed

Hey there, Friend.

Let’s talk about the holiday party that happens right in the palm of your hand: social media. During this season, our feeds can transform into a non-stop highlight reel of perfect family photos, adorable children in matching pajamas, and, of course, festive pregnancy announcements. It can feel like an emotional minefield, and a single scroll can send you into a spiral of comparison and grief.

Protecting your peace doesn't just apply to in-person events; it is absolutely crucial for your digital life as well. You have the power to curate a social media experience that feels more like a warm hug and less like a gut punch.

  • The Gentle Mute Button: The mute button is your best friend. It allows you to temporarily stop seeing someone's posts without the drama of unfriending them. They will never know, and you can always unmute them later when you feel more resilient. Mute friends who are currently pregnant, friends with newborns, or anyone whose posts feel particularly triggering right now.

  • Curate with Intention: Actively seek out and follow accounts that make you feel good. This could be accounts focused on travel, books, art, nature, humor, or even other infertility warriors who make you feel seen. Flooding your feed with content that inspires and uplifts you can change your entire experience.

  • Set Time Boundaries: Try setting gentle limits for yourself. Maybe you decide to only check social media for 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes in the evening.

Taking control of your feed is not an act of censorship; it is a radical and necessary act of self-care.

Your Gentle Reminder: Your mental health is more important than keeping up with your social media feed. The mute button is a tool of peace, not a tool of unkindness.

Friend, please don't feel guilty for protecting yourself. You would not willingly walk into a party that you knew would be full of triggers, and the same principle applies to your phone. You are in a season of life that requires you to be a fierce guardian of your own heart, both online and off.

This holiday, we encourage you to do a gentle audit of your feed. Mute with love, follow with intention, and scroll with awareness. You are creating a digital sanctuary, a place where your heart can rest. That is a beautiful and empowering choice that we celebrate in our community.

Validation is Everything: The Power of "It Makes Sense You Feel That Way" When Contemplating Donor Conception

Hey there, Supportive Friend, We've talked about the incredible power of truly listening to your loved one as they navigate the complexities of contemplating donor conception. Following closely on the heels of active listening, and often intertwined with it, is perhaps the single most impactful and healing tool in your support toolkit: validation. Validation, in its simplest form, means acknowledging that your loved one's feelings, thoughts, and experiences are real, understandable, and make sense given their unique situation. It’s about communicating, "I see you, I hear your emotional truth, and it’s okay for you to feel that way," even if you don’t personally feel the same way or fully grasp every nuance of their experience. After the often invalidating journey of infertility – where their pain might have been dismissed, their grief minimized, or their desires questioned – experiencing genuine validation from you can feel like a soothing balm to a wounded heart. The Day Our Family Expanded at a Tim Hortons

Some moments in life are so pivotal, so charged with emotion and anticipation, that they etch themselves into your memory with vivid clarity. For us, one such moment unfolded on a Thursday afternoon in May. The setting was unassuming: a corner table at a Tim Hortons. But what happened there wasn't just a meeting; it was the beginning of a new chapter, the day our family story expanded in the most beautiful and unexpected way. It was the day we first met our younger sons' genetic parents. Our journey to this Tim Hortons table had been, like so many of yours, one filled with hope, longing, and the unique path of donor conception. We had chosen to build our family using donor embryos—a decision we made with careful thought and immense gratitude. We knew, intellectually, that this meeting was important, a step towards the open and honest family we envisioned. But nothing quite prepared us for the emotions of that afternoon. There was a nervousness, of course. What would they be lik...
