GrowingMyFamily - Releasing Anxiety Around Test Results

Hey there, Friend!

Waiting for test results during the family-building journey can feel emotionally intense because it places your heart in a space where meaning, hope, and uncertainty exist at the same time.

Have you noticed how your mind sometimes begins imagining multiple possible outcomes while you are waiting?

This is a very natural response. The human brain tries to prepare emotionally by exploring different scenarios, especially when something deeply important is at stake.

But constantly imagining outcomes can increase anxiety and emotional exhaustion.

You are allowed to gently redirect your thoughts back to the present moment when result-waiting thoughts become overwhelming.

Try asking yourself, “What is happening right now that is safe enough for me to live inside?”

Not tomorrow. Not the result that may come later. Just this moment.

Anxiety around test results does not mean you are expecting something negative.

It means your heart cares deeply about what the result represents for your life.

You are not strange for feeling nervous.

Many people experience physical anxiety symptoms while waiting for medical information.

Your chest may feel tight. Your thoughts may race. Your body may feel restless or sensitive.

These are normal nervous system responses to uncertainty.

You do not need to fight anxiety in order to move through this waiting period.

Sometimes trying to eliminate anxiety can actually make it stronger.

Instead, try allowing anxiety to exist without giving it full emotional authority.

You might imagine anxiety as a visitor passing through rather than something that defines your experience.

When test result anxiety appears, slow your breathing slightly.

Let your exhale be a little longer than your inhale.

You are not trying to achieve perfect calm.

You are simply signalling safety to your nervous system inside a moment of uncertainty.

Do you feel pressure to mentally prepare yourself for disappointment before receiving results?

Some people do this because it feels emotionally protective.

But living inside imagined disappointment before outcomes are known can increase emotional suffering.

You are allowed to wait without assuming the worst.

Hope does not require you to predict negative outcomes in advance.

You may notice that your mind moves between hope and fear during waiting periods.

This is very human.

You do not need to decide which thought is correct.

Thoughts are not outcomes.

They are only experiences moving through your awareness.

If possible, try to avoid repeatedly checking information or searching online while waiting for results if it increases anxiety.

Sometimes constant information seeking during uncertainty can amplify fear rather than reduce it.

Instead, choose small grounding activities that help your body feel more settled.

Drink something warm.

Sit quietly for a few minutes.

Listen to calming music.

Hold something comforting.

The goal is not emotional control.

The goal is emotional stability inside uncertainty.

Remember that you are more than the test result you are waiting for.

Your life story is not contained inside one medical number or outcome.

Your value is not determined by this moment of waiting.

Whatever the result may be, you will still be someone who has loved, hoped, and walked courageously through a meaningful journey.

If there is one reflection to carry gently today, it is this:

You do not need to carry anxiety and outcome prediction inside your heart at the same time.

You are allowed to wait with hope, with patience, and with kindness toward yourself.

And here, in this community, we are holding your heart inside the waiting.

Sending you so much love in the spaces where uncertainty becomes gentler,

GrowingMyFamily

Validation is Everything: The Power of "It Makes Sense You Feel That Way" When Contemplating Donor Conception

Hey there, Supportive Friend, We've talked about the incredible power of truly listening to your loved one as they navigate the complexities of contemplating donor conception. Following closely on the heels of active listening, and often intertwined with it, is perhaps the single most impactful and healing tool in your support toolkit: validation. Validation, in its simplest form, means acknowledging that your loved one's feelings, thoughts, and experiences are real, understandable, and make sense given their unique situation. It’s about communicating, "I see you, I hear your emotional truth, and it’s okay for you to feel that way," even if you don’t personally feel the same way or fully grasp every nuance of their experience. After the often invalidating journey of infertility – where their pain might have been dismissed, their grief minimized, or their desires questioned – experiencing genuine validation from you can feel like a soothing balm to a wounded heart. Woven Threads: How Parenthood Through Biology and Adoption Shaped Our Hearts for Donor Embryos

The paths to building a family are as varied and intricate as the families themselves. Each journey, with its unique twists and turns, shapes us, teaches us, and expands our hearts in ways we might never have anticipated. My own path to the family I cherish today has been woven with distinct, yet beautifully interconnected threads: first, the experience of biological motherhood, then the profound journey of adopting our three children, welcoming another biological child and later, the path of welcoming our two younger sons through the use of donated embryos. It's this rich tapestry of experiences, particularly the deep lessons learned as an adoptive mom, that I believe uniquely prepared my heart and mind for embracing motherhood again through donor embryos. It wasn't about one path being "better" or "easier," but about how each experience informed the next, deepening our understanding of what family truly means. If you're navigating your own complex path...
