GrowingMyFamily - The Echoes of the Journey, Even Decades Later

Hey there, Friend,

Understand That This Journey May Live Emotionally Inside You for a Long Time

The family-building journey is not only a moment in time. For many people, it becomes part of their life story in a way that continues to carry emotional meaning even years or decades later.

You may find that memories of this experience surface unexpectedly.

It might happen when you see children growing, hear certain conversations, reflect on your past hopes, or simply remember the emotional weight of what you lived through.

This is not unusual.

Meaningful life experiences tend to stay inside emotional memory because they are connected to identity, longing, resilience, and love.

Accept That Emotional Echoes Are Normal

You are not expected to completely “move on” in a way that erases this chapter of your life.

Some people feel pressure to close the emotional story once treatment ends or once a family is built.

But human experience does not work that way.

Your journey may remain part of your emotional landscape.

This does not mean you are stuck in the past.

It means your life story contains meaningful experiences that shaped who you are.

Allow Both Healing and Memory to Coexist

Healing does not require forgetting.

You can build a joyful and meaningful life while still remembering what you went through.

You are allowed to hold gratitude for what you have built and also acknowledge the difficulty of the path you walked.

These emotions can live together.

Notice How Memories Appear Without Judging Them

Sometimes the emotional echoes of the journey may appear as nostalgia, grief, pride, or reflection.

You do not need to push these memories away.

Try observing them gently when they arise.

You might say to yourself:

“This is part of my story, and it is okay that it still lives inside me.”

Share Your Story if It Feels Safe

Some people find healing through speaking about their journey with trusted individuals or within supportive communities.

Others prefer to keep parts of their experience private.

Both choices are valid.

There is no requirement to publicly narrate your emotional history.

Release the Expectation That Time Alone Will Remove Emotional Meaning

People often believe that emotional intensity should fade completely with time.

But meaningful experiences do not necessarily disappear emotionally.

What often changes is how the memory feels inside you.

It may become softer, more integrated, or less painful.

Understand That Future Happiness Does Not Cancel Past Struggle

Building a family or reaching desired outcomes does not erase the difficulty you experienced.

Your past journey remains part of who you are.

You are not required to prove that you are completely detached from your history in order to live joyfully.

Honour Your Story Without Letting It Define Your Entire Identity

Your journey is an important chapter, but it is not the only chapter.

You are also someone who lives beyond this experience.

You are more than the path you walked to build your family.

A Gentle Reflection

Ask yourself sometimes:

“What parts of my journey do I want to carry with tenderness rather than pain?”

You do not need to force emotional closure.

You are allowed to let your story live inside you in a way that feels peaceful rather than heavy.

And here, in this community, we are honouring the echoes of your courage, even across time.

Sending you so much love in the spaces where memory and healing meet,

GrowingMyFamily 🌸

Validation is Everything: The Power of "It Makes Sense You Feel That Way" When Contemplating Donor Conception

Hey there, Supportive Friend, We've talked about the incredible power of truly listening to your loved one as they navigate the complexities of contemplating donor conception. Following closely on the heels of active listening, and often intertwined with it, is perhaps the single most impactful and healing tool in your support toolkit: validation. Validation, in its simplest form, means acknowledging that your loved one's feelings, thoughts, and experiences are real, understandable, and make sense given their unique situation. It’s about communicating, "I see you, I hear your emotional truth, and it’s okay for you to feel that way," even if you don’t personally feel the same way or fully grasp every nuance of their experience. After the often invalidating journey of infertility – where their pain might have been dismissed, their grief minimized, or their desires questioned – experiencing genuine validation from you can feel like a soothing balm to a wounded heart. Woven Threads: How Parenthood Through Biology and Adoption Shaped Our Hearts for Donor Embryos

The paths to building a family are as varied and intricate as the families themselves. Each journey, with its unique twists and turns, shapes us, teaches us, and expands our hearts in ways we might never have anticipated. My own path to the family I cherish today has been woven with distinct, yet beautifully interconnected threads: first, the experience of biological motherhood, then the profound journey of adopting our three children, welcoming another biological child and later, the path of welcoming our two younger sons through the use of donated embryos. It's this rich tapestry of experiences, particularly the deep lessons learned as an adoptive mom, that I believe uniquely prepared my heart and mind for embracing motherhood again through donor embryos. It wasn't about one path being "better" or "easier," but about how each experience informed the next, deepening our understanding of what family truly means. If you're navigating your own complex path...
